A white field with a green central square bearing the Brasília Cross, four yellow arrows pointing to the cardinal directions: white stands for peace, the arrows for Indigenous heritage and for the capital's power radiating across the country. Designed by poet and heraldist Guilherme de Almeida, it was adopted in 1969.
Overview

About Cerrado Waterfalls around Brasília

Beyond the modernist Plano Piloto, the Federal District keeps a surprising amount of Cerrado, the savanna biome of central Brazil, on a plateau between roughly 700 and 1,300 m. This circuit gathers the natural sites that can be reached as day trips without leaving the DF. Brasília National Park, created in 1961 and locally called Água Mineral, lies about 10 km from the centre and offers spring-fed swimming pools and short trails, and it protects the Santa Maria reservoir, which supplies around 29% of the District's water. In Brazlândia, some 45 to 50 km from the centre, Poço Azul is a complex of more than 15 falls and pools known for their blue water, and the nearby Chapada Imperial, a private reserve of about 4,800 hectares, has more than 30 waterfalls visited with local guides. To the south, the Salto do Tororó falls inside a district park created in 2015, and to the northeast, near Planaltina, the Águas Emendadas Ecological Station protects the point where waters flow toward both the Tocantins-Araguaia and the Paraná-Plata basins. For agencies, the circuit turns a Brasília city stay into a more rounded program, adding a nature half day or full day for architecture groups, incentive and conference delegates, families and soft adventure clients. Distances are short and most sites combine well with an early start and a lunch back in town or on site. Logistics are straightforward but need checking: several accesses end on dirt roads, facilities range from well organised private reserves to sites with no toilets or food, some places accept cash only, and Águas Emendadas is open only for research and educational visits arranged in advance. The rainy season, from October to April, brings fuller falls, while June to August is almost completely dry, with lower water but easy trails and clear skies.

Curiosities & practical notes

✓Brasília National Park is often described as the largest park in an urbanised area in the world, and it received about 251,000 visitors in 2019.
✓The park's pools are fed by running spring water, and groups of capuchin monkeys frequent the area, so food should be kept out of reach.
✓The Trilha da Capivara in the national park takes about 20 minutes, while the Cristal Água trail takes about two hours.
✓At Águas Emendadas, streams flow north into the Tocantins basin and south into the Plata basin, and in the rainy season fish from both basins can mingle.
✓Poço Azul trails range from about 800 m to 2 km depending on the pool, reached on a dirt road; arriving early on weekends avoids crowds, and cash is advisable.
✓Chapada Imperial is described as the largest private ecological reserve in the DF, and its day packages combine guided walks, activities and lunch.
✓The Salto do Tororó has no entrance fee but no toilets or food either, and is reached from the DF-140 on an unpaved access road.
✓About 84% of the annual rain falls between October and April, while June to August accounts for only around 2%, so waterfall volume varies strongly by season.
✓The Plano Piloto World Heritage property covers about 11,269 hectares, and nature half days combine easily with its architecture visits.
