About Porto de Galinhas
Porto de Galinhas is a beach village in the municipality of Ipojuca, on the south coast of Pernambuco, about 60 km from Recife's international airport. Its name, the port of chickens, recalls the illegal slave trade of the 19th century, when smugglers used the password "there are new chickens in the port" to announce enslaved people landed among crates of guineafowl. Today it is one of Brazil's most popular beach destinations, repeatedly voted the country's best beach by readers of Viagem e Turismo magazine. The signature experience is the ride by jangada, the traditional fishing raft, to the natural pools that form inside the reef at low tide, with warm, clear water and reef fish. The coast of Ipojuca extends the offer: Muro Alto, a 3 km beach sheltered by a reef wall and lined with large resorts; Cupe and Serrambi; and Maracaípe, a surf beach whose river estuary, the Pontal de Maracaípe, is home to seahorses and known for its sunsets. Further south, Praia dos Carneiros in Tamandaré adds palm-fringed sandbanks, calm estuary water and a small 18th-century chapel on the beach. For agencies, Porto de Galinhas suits leisure FIT and families, honeymooners, incentive groups and MICE programs using the resort cluster at Muro Alto, and beach extensions after Recife and Olinda. Logistics are simple, with road transfers of about an hour from REC, but a few points need honest planning. The pool trips depend entirely on the tide, so daily schedules should be built around the tide table, and jangada capacity is shared with every other visitor in high season. The rainiest months are April to July, while September to February is the most reliable period. The village centre is compact and busy, so larger groups often stay at Muro Alto and transfer in. Carneiros works best as a full-day trip or a separate stay of two nights.
