TAP Air Portugal has started flying between Lisbon and São Luís, the first regular air link between Maranhão and Europe (Panrotas, October 2026). The service began on Monday 26 October (AeroRoutes, February 2026; DN Brasil, October 2026), and the inaugural flight reached São Luís at 00:10 with 159 passengers on board (Panrotas, October 2026).
Two things about it deserve more attention than the launch itself. The return leg is not a mirror image of the outbound, and the timetable already changes at the end of March.
The winter schedule as published
On the winter 2026/27 schedule, flights leave Lisbon on Mondays and Thursdays at 19:05 and land in São Luís at 00:10 the next day (Panrotas, February 2026). The way back runs on Tuesdays and Fridays: departure from São Luís at 01:40, arrival in Fortaleza at 03:00, departure from Fortaleza at 04:30, arrival in Lisbon at 14:50 (AeroRoutes, 9 February 2026).
The routing is Lisbon, São Luís, Fortaleza, Lisbon, twice weekly, and overall weekly service to Fortaleza rises from seven flights to nine as a result (AeroRoutes, February 2026). Outbound it is nonstop to São Luís. Inbound, passengers make a stop in Fortaleza.
What changes on 30 March 2027
The route goes to three flights a week from the 2027 summer season, a change confirmed and put on sale back in May 2026 (Melhores Destinos, 21 May 2026; Passageiro de Primeira, 25 May 2026). O Imparcial dates the third frequency to 28 March 2027, the start of the summer season (O Imparcial, 26 May 2026), and the first Lisbon departure under the new pattern falls on Tuesday 30 March (Passageiro de Primeira, 25 May 2026).
From then Lisbon to São Luís runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, leaving at 19:05 and arriving at 23:15, before midnight rather than after it (Passageiro de Primeira, 25 May 2026). The return runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, leaving São Luís at 00:45, stopping in Fortaleza from 02:05 to 03:35 with no aircraft change, and reaching Lisbon at 14:55 (Passageiro de Primeira, 25 May 2026). Melhores Destinos publishes the same rotation five minutes earlier throughout, 00:40 out of São Luís and 14:50 into Lisbon (Melhores Destinos, 21 May 2026). Confirm the minutes with TAP.
The Monday departure disappears and moves to Tuesday (Melhores Destinos, 21 May 2026). Anyone quoting 2027 departures off the current timetable is quoting the wrong one.
What the timings do to a program
This winter, clients on the Monday departure arrive in the first minutes of Tuesday, and those on the Thursday departure in the first minutes of Friday. Read against the published timetable, the Monday arrival can fly home on the Friday service, about three days later, or on the following Tuesday. That is our reading of the timetable, not a TAP statement.
Two practical consequences follow this season. The first night’s room is needed from the evening before arrival, and the last transfer to the airport happens in the middle of the night. From the summer season the first one eases, because an arrival at 23:15 still lands on the day of departure, and the return leaves at 00:45 instead of 01:40. Both are easy to handle on the ground if they are in the contract from the start.
Seats, and what they imply for groups
The aircraft is an Airbus A321LR with 171 seats, 16 in business and 155 in economy (Panrotas, October 2026). Two weekly rotations give 342 seats a week into São Luís this winter, 32 of them in business, and three rotations give 513 and 48 once the third frequency starts, by our arithmetic from those figures. The inaugural flight carried 159 passengers, about 93 percent of the seats, though a launch flight says little about the load factor to come.
For a group of 20 or more this is a narrow-body schedule with two or three departures a week. Blocks will need to be requested early, and a split across two departures is the realistic fallback. TAP has quoted return fares from €705 with taxes included (DN Brasil, October 2026).
A supply decision ahead of demand
O Imparcial, citing the Maranhão state government, reported 100 international tourists in the state between January and April 2026, against 28 in the same months of 2025 (O Imparcial, 11 June 2026). The absolute numbers are very small, and the 257.1 percent increase quoted from them is a function of that small base. The series behind them is compiled by Embratur with the Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Police, and what it counts state by state is worth checking before any of it goes into a business case.
That makes the route a bet on supply rather than an answer to measured demand. TAP presented São Luís as a new destination on 4 February 2026 at an event in the city, attended by Governor Carlos Brandão (Panrotas, February 2026). Opinion, flagged as such: a route announced more than eight months before launch, and extended to three weekly before it had flown once, gives sellers time to build product, and the sellers who use that time will have the first contracts.
Where it sits in TAP’s Brazil network
With São Luís, TAP connects 15 Brazilian cities to Portugal through 17 routes from Lisbon and Porto (Panrotas, October 2026). Embratur president Bruno Reis, in comments reported by Panrotas, said that a new international route is worth more than a link between two points, and pointed to the Lençóis Maranhenses as the draw (Panrotas, October 2026).
What to check before selling it
Two things the trade press does not cover: whether the Fortaleza stop allows a stopover or only a connection, and the fare buckets available to the trade. Both are questions for TAP’s trade desk, and both are worth answering before dates go into a brochure.
