Overview

About Brasília

As Brazil's federal capital and seat of government, Brasília is the country's premier hub for government-relations, diplomatic, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) travel. Home to the Presidential Palace, National Congress, Supreme Federal Court, and virtually every foreign embassy in Brazil, the city gives DMCs a unique combination of high-level institutional access, a mature convention and hotel infrastructure, and one of Latin America's most architecturally significant urban landscapes — Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa's UNESCO-listed Pilot Plan. For corporate incentive groups and government-facing itineraries alike, Brasília's compact monumental axis makes it efficient to combine official meetings, striking architecture, and cultural touring within a single day.

Curiosities & practical notes

Lúcio Costa's Pilot Plan lays the city out in the shape of an airplane when viewed from above.
Brasília uses a sector-and-block numbering system (e.g. SQN, SQS) instead of traditional street names.
The historic core was built in only 41 months, from 1956 to 1960.
Brasília is the only 20th-century city whose modernist urban plan is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Catedral Metropolitana's 16 curved concrete columns are said to represent two hands reaching toward the sky.
The Torre de TV Digital stands 224 m tall, with a public belvedere at 75 m overlooking the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
Strict height limits keep the skyline low outside the residential superblocks, preserving sightlines along the monumental axis.
The original 1960 plan favored roundabouts over traffic lights, still visible along the Eixo Monumental today.
Brasília sits on a high Cerrado plateau at roughly 1,000+ m elevation, giving it a milder climate than much of Brazil.
Nearly every country with diplomatic relations to Brazil maintains an embassy in Brasília's Setor de Embaixadas.
Palácio do Itamaraty, Niemeyer's headquarters for Brazil's foreign ministry, is nicknamed the 'Palace of Arches' and has gardens by Roberto Burle Marx.
Brasília is Brazil's third most populous city, though the Plano Piloto itself has a comparatively small resident population.
