Overview

About Jalapão

Jalapão is Tocantins' flagship hard-adventure product — a remote stretch of Cerrado savanna in the state's eastern reaches, anchored by the 158,885-hectare Jalapão State Park created in 2001. DMCs sell it as a small-group ecotourism circuit built around fervedouros (spring-fed pools where an underground current keeps bathers effortlessly afloat), golden sand dunes, and waterfalls on the Rio Novo and Rio Sono. Access is the defining planning constraint: there is no paved road network within the region, distances between attractions run into the hundreds of kilometres over sandy dirt tracks, and 4x4 vehicles with experienced local drivers are mandatory for essentially every itinerary. Most operators stage clients through Palmas and base them in Mateiros or São Félix do Tocantins, the small gateway towns that hold the region's limited pousada-style lodging — there are no international hotel brands in Jalapão itself. Because the unpaved terrain becomes difficult or impassable in the rains, the practical booking window is effectively locked to the dry season, from roughly May to September.

Good to know

Curiosities & practical notes

The dry season, roughly May to September, is effectively required for access — rains turn the region's sandy dirt roads into mud and can strand vehicles
Fervedouros are natural spring pools where an underground current pushes up through a fissure in the sand, creating a 'boiling' effect that makes bathers float effortlessly
To protect the fragile spring formations, visits to individual fervedouros are typically capped at around 20 minutes per group
The name 'Jalapão' is not an official municipality — it refers to a wider micro-region spanning parts of several Tocantins municipalities, including Mateiros and São Félix do Tocantins
There is no paved highway network inside the Jalapão region; 4x4 vehicles are considered mandatory for virtually all itineraries
Jalapão sits within the Cerrado, South America's largest savanna biome, which separates the Amazon rainforest from Brazil's Atlantic coast
Capim dourado (golden grass) handicraft, woven mainly by women in the Mumbuca quilombola community, is protected as a regional geographic indication by INPI
The region's golden sand dunes near the Serra do Espírito Santo are a signature sunset viewpoint for visitors
Jalapão State Park covers roughly 158,885 hectares in the municipality of Mateiros
The Cerrado biome around Jalapão is a Cerrado Biosphere Reserve core area, connecting to the Serra Geral do Tocantins Ecological Station
Endangered species such as the maned wolf and the rare Brazilian merganser duck inhabit the wider Jalapão ecological corridor
Mateiros and São Félix do Tocantins are the principal gateway towns, offering the region's limited pousada-style lodging
Mobile signal and infrastructure are limited or absent across much of the region, reinforcing the need for guided, locally-driven itineraries
