About Curitiba
Curitiba, capital of Paraná, sits on a plateau at around 930 metres, which gives it one of the coolest climates of any Brazilian state capital. Founded in 1693 and shaped by German, Italian, Polish and Ukrainian immigration from the 1850s, it became a reference in urban planning from the 1970s, when it opened one of the world's first bus rapid transit systems. Its visitor landmarks are compact and modern: the glasshouse of the Botanical Garden, the steel-tube Ópera de Arame and Oscar Niemeyer's museum known as the Eye. East of the city, the Serra do Mar drops to the coast through some of the best-preserved Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The Curitiba to Paranaguá railway, opened in 1885, crosses it via 13 tunnels and dozens of bridges and viaducts, and the Serra Verde Express runs tourist trains down to Morretes, home of barreado. Beyond lie colonial Antonina on its bay and Ilha do Mel, a car-free island of beaches and trails. For agencies, the region works as a two to four night circuit or as a southern add-on to Iguaçu Falls, suited to rail enthusiasts, food-focused groups, nature lovers and incentive programs looking for something outside the usual beach and Amazon routes. A typical sequence is a city day in Curitiba, the train descent to Morretes with a barreado lunch, a stop in Antonina and one or two nights on Ilha do Mel. Logistics are manageable but need planning: the train takes around four and a half hours one way, so most programs return by road; Ilha do Mel is reached only by boat from Pontal do Sul or Paranaguá, has no motor vehicles and caps daily visitors at 5,000, so luggage handling and accommodation must be arranged in advance. Weather in the Serra is changeable and views from the train can be lost to cloud.
