Overview

About Fortaleza & Jericoacoara

Fortaleza and Jericoacoara form Ceará's signature beach-and-adventure pairing on Brazil's Northeast coast, combining a major international gateway with one of the country's most in-demand dune-and-lagoon destinations. Fortaleza–Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) gives ground operators direct international and domestic lift into a modern coastal capital with urban beaches, cultural venues, and a full range of hotel inventory, while a roughly 300 km transfer — or a short domestic hop into Jericoacoara's own Comte. Ariston Pessoa Regional Airport (JJD) — connects into the car-free dune village that regularly ranks among Brazil's most-visited national parks. For DMCs and tour operators, the route supports flexible programming: city stopovers and MICE in Fortaleza, then multi-day beach, kitesurf, and buggy-excursion product in Jericoacoara, with strong wind-season demand from August through November and a second high season tied to Brazilian summer holidays.

Good to know

Curiosities & practical notes

Jericoacoara sits roughly 300 km from Fortaleza; overland transfers run 4–5 hours on paved/unpaved roads, while a direct flight into JJD cuts the trip to well under an hour.
Jericoacoara's village core has sand streets and no paved roads — 4x4 vehicles and dune buggies are the standard local transport for excursions and hotel transfers.
Kitesurf and windsurf season peaks August–November, with winds reported up to roughly 40 knots; July–December is the dry season overall, while January–June is rainier but fills the lagoons and greens the dunes.
The nightly gathering on the Duna do Pôr do Sol (Sunset Dune) to watch sunset is a daily ritual in Jericoacoara village and a key selling point for evening programming.
Fortaleza–Pinto Martins (FOR) is managed by Fraport Brasil and is the main international/domestic gateway for the region.
JJD (Jericoacoara) is served by Azul, Gol, and LATAM, with connections via São Paulo–Guarulhos and Belo Horizonte–Confins, plus seasonal Brasília service.
Praia do Futuro's beach 'barracas' (beach clubs) in Fortaleza were declared Brazilian federal cultural heritage in January 2025, formally recognizing them as venues for group beach-day programming.
Jericoacoara National Park ranked as Brazil's 3rd most-visited national park in 2024 (ICMBio), so peak-season crowding at the sunset dune and main viewpoints should be factored into itinerary timing.
Popular day-trip add-ons from Fortaleza include Cumbuco (kitesurf/buggy rides), Canoa Quebrada in Aracati, and the colored-sand cliffs of Morro Branco/Fontes in Beberibe.
Local time is UTC-3 (Brasília Time) year-round; Brazil has not observed daylight saving since 2019.
High season overlaps Brazilian summer school holidays (December–February/March) and July, in addition to the August–November wind season — expect tighter hotel and vehicle availability across both windows.
Ceará's coastal economy has a strong lobster (lagosta) fishing tradition, reflected in the region's seafood-forward menus.
