Ceará flag
Ceará
Adopted in 1922, it echoes the national flag: a green field with a yellow rhombus and a white disc bearing the state arms. The arms show a jangada raft, a carnaúba palm, the Mucuripe lighthouse and a fort, with seven stars for the state's mesoregions and a dove recalling the early abolition of slavery.
Overview

About Fortaleza

Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, is one of Brazil's largest cities, with about 2.4 million residents in the 2022 census, and one of the country's most visited tourist destinations. Its origins lie in a Dutch fort of 1649, later taken by the Portuguese, and the city became the seat of Ceará in 1799. Today it faces the Atlantic along some 34 km of urban coastline: Praia de Iracema and Meireles with the Avenida Beira Mar promenade, the fishing tradition of Mucuripe, and the beach clubs of Praia do Futuro. Culture is concentrated in the Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura, in a former port area, and in the historic centre around the Theatro José de Alencar, the cathedral and the Mercado Central. Just beyond the city limits lie Beach Park at Porto das Dunas in Aquiraz, and Cumbuco in Caucaia, an international kitesurfing spot. For agencies, Fortaleza works as the base for Ceará and as an arrival point for the wider Northeast. It suits beach FIT and families, incentive and conference groups that need a large hotel stock, and city stays before or after Jericoacoara, Canoa Quebrada or the Rota das Emoções. The airport has direct flights to Lisbon and Paris alongside a broad domestic network, which simplifies European routings. Rain is concentrated from January to June or July, peaking in March and April, while August to December is dry and windy, the prime season for kite programs. Plan realistic transfer times: Jericoacoara is about 300 km away by road, so most clients combine the city with a flight or a full transfer day. Within Fortaleza, the Theatro José de Alencar and the Dragão do Mar make easy evening cultural add-ons, the Thursday crab nights at Praia do Futuro work well as a group dinner, and Beach Park or a buggy afternoon in Cumbuco give families and active clients variety without long drives.
