About Recife
Recife, capital of Pernambuco, takes its name from the stone reefs that line its shore. Founded in 1537 as the port of the sugar-rich captaincy, it lies where the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers meet the Atlantic, a low-lying city of islands, estuaries and more than 50 bridges that earned it the nickname of the Venice of Brazil. The municipality counted about 1.49 million people in the 2022 census, at the heart of a metropolitan area of more than four million. Between 1630 and 1654 Recife was the capital of Dutch Brazil, known as Mauritsstad under Johan Maurits of Nassau, and that period left Kahal Zur Israel, remembered as the first synagogue of the Americas. Recife Antigo, the historic port district around Marco Zero, concentrates museums such as the Paço do Frevo, while the old centre of Santo Antônio holds the gilded Capela Dourada and the Casa da Cultura, a former prison turned craft market. In the western suburb of Várzea stand the two Brennand complexes, Francisco Brennand's ceramic workshop and the Instituto Ricardo Brennand. Frevo, the fast brass-band music and umbrella dance born in the city, is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. For agencies, Recife suits cultural and heritage city programs, Jewish heritage itineraries, art-focused visits, gastronomy and, above all, carnival departures built around the Galo da Madrugada. It also works for MICE and incentive groups, with an international airport close to the city. The UNESCO-listed town of Olinda, about 6 km north, is the natural half-day or full-day add-on. Honest planning points: the Brennand complexes lie on the western edge of the city, so allow a half day for them; carnival requires early booking and careful crowd management; sea bathing at Boa Viagem needs care because of recorded shark incidents; and the rainy season from April to July, with June the wettest month, can affect outdoor programs.
Aeroporto Internacional do Recife/Guararapes, Gilberto Freyre
Pernambuco's main gateway, operated by Aena under a 30-year concession, with the longest runway in Northeastern Brazil (3,300 m), a direct metro link and international routes such as Lisbon and Madrid; it handled close to 10 million passengers in 2025.
