Overview

About Xingó Canyons

The Xingó Canyons are a stretch of the São Francisco River in the semi-arid sertão where Sergipe meets Alagoas. Since the Xingó hydroelectric dam began filling its reservoir in 1994, the river has risen between steep rock walls, creating a navigable valley of green water some 65 km long and up to 170 metres deep. Catamaran trips from Canindé de São Francisco, on the Sergipe bank, run upstream to the Talhado area, where small boats slip into a narrow, red-walled gorge and roped areas allow swimming. On the Alagoas side, the riverside town of Piranhas, listed by IPHAN in 2004, preserves a 19th-century centre and railway station tied to river trade and to the story of Lampião, the cangaceiro killed in a 1938 ambush at nearby Grota do Angico. The Museu de Arqueologia de Xingó, run by the Federal University of Sergipe, holds more than 50,000 items from the archaeological rescue carried out before the dam was built. For agencies, Xingó works as a one or two night extension from Aracaju or Maceió, and suits groups interested in landscape, river experiences, sertão culture and Brazilian history beyond the coast. A typical program combines the canyon catamaran, the Rota do Cangaço boat and trail to Grota do Angico, and a walk through Piranhas, ideally with an overnight stay in the historic town or in Canindé so that boat trips can start early. Logistics require realistic timing: Canindé is about 210 km, roughly three and a half hours by road, from Aracaju, and Piranhas about 265 to 280 km from Maceió, so day trips are long. Catamarans are large shared vessels, so private departures should be requested early. The climate is hot and dry with strong sun, and the drier winter months are the most comfortable for trails.

History

How Xingó Canyons came to be

Sourced milestones your team can use for guest briefings and storytelling, not filler copy.

01
1879
The railway station and clock tower of Piranhas are built for the Estrada de Ferro Paulo Afonso.
02
1891
The line between Piranhas and Jatobá, in Pernambuco, is completed, boosting trade across the lower São Francisco.
03
1938
On 28 July, Lampião, Maria Bonita and nine other cangaceiros are killed at Grota do Angico, and their heads are displayed in Piranhas.
04
1953
Canindé de São Francisco is established as a municipality in Sergipe.
05
1964
The Paulo Afonso railway is deactivated; Piranhas' station later becomes the Museu do Sertão.
06
1987
Construction of the Xingó hydroelectric dam begins in March on the Sergipe and Alagoas border.
07
1994
On 10 June the dam begins to impound the river, flooding the gorge and creating today's navigable canyons.
08
2000
The Museu de Arqueologia de Xingó is created by the Federal University of Sergipe with CHESF, from the dam's archaeological rescue program.
09
2004
IPHAN lists Piranhas' historic and landscape site, including the Entremontes district and 13 km of the São Francisco River.
Good to know

Curiosities & practical notes

✓The canyons are a result of the dam: the reservoir flooded the gorge from 1994, so today's boat routes did not exist before then.
✓The Xingó dam is 140 metres high and 830 metres long, with six 527 MW turbines for a total installed capacity of 3,162 MW, operated by CHESF.
✓The main canyon catamaran outing lasts about three hours, with around an hour of navigation each way and an hour for swimming at the Talhado area.
✓Entering the narrowest gorge at Talhado requires transferring to a small boat, usually sold as an optional extra on board.
✓Catamarans carry up to around 250 passengers on two decks, so groups seeking a quieter experience should ask for private boats.
✓The Rota do Cangaço trip leaves from Piranhas by boat, followed by a trail to Grota do Angico, with guides narrating the story of Lampião's last camp.
✓Piranhas' Museu do Sertão, in the old railway station, displays weapons, clothing and the famous photograph of the cangaceiros' heads.
✓Paulo Afonso airport in Bahia is geographically closer but has no scheduled flights, so Aracaju and Maceió are the practical gateways.
✓Rain in the area falls mainly from April to June; the rest of the year is dry and hot, so sun protection and hydration matter on the boats.
