About Gramado
Gramado is a resort town of about 40,000 people (2022 census) in the Serra Gaúcha, the highland of north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul, sitting at around 830 m above sea level some 115 km from Porto Alegre. First settled around 1875, it received German and Italian colonists and became a municipality in December 1954. Today the town lives from tourism: official figures cite some 6 million visitors a year, about 18,000 hotel beds and more than 200 restaurants. Its image is European and carefully managed, with half-timbered and alpine-style buildings, flower beds typical of the Região das Hortênsias, the Lago Negro lined with pines brought from the Black Forest, the covered Rua Coberta and the Palácio dos Festivais, home since 1973 of the Gramado Film Festival. From November to January the Natal Luz has earned Gramado the label of Brazil's Christmas capital. Gramado is also a stop on the Rota Romântica, a 184 km scenic route through 14 municipalities of German heritage. For agencies, Gramado is one of the easiest destinations in southern Brazil to package. It suits FIT couples and families, senior groups, incentive trips and MICE events, with conference hotels, gastronomic dinners of fondue, café colonial and galeto, chocolate factories and theme attractions such as Mini Mundo and the Snowland indoor snow park. Canela, about 6 km away, is the natural add-on for waterfalls and canyon viewpoints. Honest logistics: most clients fly into Porto Alegre and transfer 1.5 to 2 hours by road; Caxias do Sul airport is closer but often affected by fog. Demand peaks in the July winter holidays, during the August film festival and throughout the Natal Luz season, when hotel rates rise and show tickets must be booked well ahead. Winters are cold and damp, with frosts and temperatures that can drop below 0°C, so programs need indoor alternatives.
Aeroporto Internacional Salgado Filho, Porto Alegre
Rio Grande do Sul's main airport, with a 3,200 m runway and domestic and regional international flights; closed by the May 2024 floods, it resumed full operations on 16 December 2024. Direct buses run from the airport to the Serra Gaúcha.
Aeroporto Regional Hugo Cantergiani, Caxias do Sul
Regional airport with scheduled flights to São Paulo and Campinas, and to Rio de Janeiro-Galeão; it is prone to closures from fog and bad weather, so it works best as a secondary option.
