Overview

About Porto Velho

Porto Velho, capital of Rondônia, stands on the eastern bank of the Madeira River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon, in Brazil's far west near the Bolivian border. The city grew from the construction camp of the Estrada de Ferro Madeira-Mamoré, the 366 km railway built between 1907 and 1912 to carry Bolivian rubber around the Madeira rapids. Its railway yard, the three American-made water tanks and the chapel of Santo Antônio still anchor the historic core, and the restored railway complex reopened in 2024 as a riverside museum and public space. Beyond the capital, the state offers the Real Forte Príncipe da Beira on the Guaporé River, the border town of Guajará-Mirim facing Bolivia, and the Pacaás Novos National Park. Rondônia suits heritage-minded and special-interest programs: railway and rubber-era history, river sunsets on the Madeira, Amazon gastronomy and extensions toward the Bolivian frontier, typically as a short add-on to Manaus or the Pantanal circuits. Logistics call for honest planning. Distances are long (Guajará-Mirim is about 327 km by road, Costa Marques about 710 km), the rainy season from November to April is heavy, and protected areas require prior consultation with ICMBio. Private transfers and experienced local ground handling are recommended throughout.

Curiosities & practical notes

✓The Madeira-Mamoré is remembered as the "Ferrovia do Diabo" (Devil's Railway) for the hardships of its construction; the sanitarian Oswaldo Cruz was contracted to fight tropical disease on the works.
✓Many railway workers came from the Caribbean, mainly Barbados, and settled a district once called Barbados Town, today known as Alto do Bode.
✓The Três Caixas d'Água, locally called the "Três Marias", were made by Chicago Bridge & Iron Works and installed in 1910-1912; they appear on the municipal flag.
✓The Capela de Santo Antônio de Pádua, begun in 1910 and inaugurated in 1914, is one of the few surviving structures of the former town of Santo Antônio do Rio Madeira, the railway's original starting point.
✓The Santo Antônio hydroelectric plant on the Madeira, in operation since 2012, runs 50 bulb turbines with an installed capacity of about 3,568 MW.
✓Matas de Rondônia was recognised in 2021 as a Denomination of Origin for Amazonian robusta coffee, described by Embrapa as the world's first geographical indication for sustainable canephora coffee.
✓Guajará-Mirim faces the Bolivian town of Guayaramerín across the Mamoré River, hosts a free-trade area, and more than 93% of its municipal territory lies within protected areas.
✓Pico do Tracoá, at 1,126 m inside Pacaás Novos National Park, is the highest point in Rondônia.
✓Practical note: Rondônia runs on Amazon time (UTC-4), one hour behind Brasília, and Brazil no longer observes daylight saving time.
✓Practical note: November to April is very wet, with around 200 mm of rain a month in Porto Velho; June to August is the dry season and the easiest window for road and river travel.
✓Practical note: the Madeira-Mamoré museum opens Wednesday to Sunday, with guided or self-guided visits booked online in advance.
✓Practical note: road distances from Porto Velho are significant, about 327 km to Guajará-Mirim and about 710 km to Costa Marques, the municipality of the Real Forte Príncipe da Beira.
