The state

Piauí is a large, sparsely visited state that runs from a short Atlantic coastline, about 66 km long, deep into the interior, with caatinga to the east and cerrado to the southwest. Its capital, Teresina, is the only Northeast state capital away from the sea, laid out in 1852 as one of Brazil's first planned cities at the meeting of the Parnaíba and Poti rivers. The state's standout asset is Serra da Capivara National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with around 400 catalogued archaeological sites and a remarkable concentration of prehistoric rock paintings. On the coast, the Parnaíba Delta forms a maze of islands, mangroves and dunes.

For agencies Piauí lends itself to special-interest and small-group itineraries: archaeology and landscape circuits in the south, and the delta as part of the Rota das Emoções linking Lençóis Maranhenses in Maranhão with Jericoacoara in Ceará. Distances are significant; São Raimundo Nonato, the gateway to Serra da Capivara, lies about 510 km by road from Teresina and about 300 km from Petrolina, so ground logistics and realistic pacing are essential. Service levels outside Teresina and Parnaíba are simpler, which suits travellers looking for authenticity.

When to go

Serra da Capivara is most comfortable in the dry season, roughly May to October. On the coast around Parnaíba the rains fall mainly from January to June, and July to December is drier; Teresina is very hot from August to November.
