Overview

About Pantanal

The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland, spanning the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul and recognized by UNESCO as both a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. For ground operators, it is Brazil's premier wildlife-safari destination: open floodplains and gallery forest deliver reliable, close-range sightings of jaguar, giant otter, capybara, caiman and hyacinth macaw that are far harder to guarantee in denser Amazon rainforest itineraries. Access splits into two established circuits — the northern Pantanal via Cuiabá and the Transpantaneira highway to Porto Jofre, widely regarded as the most reliable place on Earth to see wild jaguar, and the southern Pantanal via Campo Grande, centered on ranch-lodge (fazenda) stays around Miranda and Aquidauana. Both circuits run on a limited network of family-run pousadas and fazenda-lodges rather than large hotel chains, so allocations are lodge-specific and finite — advance blocking is essential, particularly for the June-October dry season when wildlife concentrates around shrinking waterholes and river channels.

History

How Pantanal came to be

Sourced milestones your team can use for guest briefings and storytelling — not filler copy.

01
Pre-1543
Indigenous peoples including the Guaicuru, Paiaguá, Guató and Bororo inhabit the Pantanal, adapted to its seasonal flood cycle — the Guaicuru as expert horsemen of the southern plains, the Paiaguá as river-based canoeists.
02
1543
Spanish expedition leader Álvaro Núñez Cabeza de Vaca crosses the wetland, naming it the "Sea of the Xaraés" — among the first European accounts of the region.
03
1719
Bandeirante Pascoal Moreira Cabral discovers gold on the Cuiabá river; the settlement of Cuiabá is founded, becoming the region's administrative gateway.
04
1748
Portugal creates the Captaincy of Mato Grosso, formalizing colonial administration over the wetland and its surrounding highlands.
05
19th century
As gold deposits decline, the economy shifts to extensive cattle ranching on the floodplain — a low-density, seasonally-adapted grazing system that still defines Pantanal fazendas today.
06
1981
Pantanal Matogrossense National Park is established, the first major federal protected area within the wetland.
07
1990s-2000s
Jaguar-focused ecotourism develops around Porto Jofre and the Transpantaneira, as cattle fazendas increasingly diversify into wildlife-viewing lodges.
08
2000
UNESCO inscribes the Pantanal Conservation Area as a World Heritage Site and designates the wider Pantanal a Biosphere Reserve.

Curiosities & practical notes

The Pantanal covers roughly 140,000-195,000 km² across Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay — about ten times the area of Florida's Everglades — making it the world's largest tropical wetland.
Around 78-80% of the floodplain submerges in the November-March wet season; the June-October dry season concentrates wildlife around shrinking waterholes and river channels, making it the best window for game viewing.
The Transpantaneira highway runs 147 km from Poconé to Porto Jofre and crosses more than 120 wooden bridges — built to link cattle ranches across the floodplain, it doubles as one of the world's best wildlife-viewing roads.
Porto Jofre and the Rio Cuiabá corridor are widely regarded by researchers and operators as the most reliable place on Earth to see wild jaguar.
The Pantanal is home to one of the highest concentrations of jaguars found anywhere in the world.
The region has over 650 recorded bird species, including the hyacinth macaw, the world's largest flying parrot, which nests in the Pantanal's manduvi trees.
An estimated 10 million yacaré caimans inhabit the Pantanal's rivers and lagoons.
The UNESCO-listed Pantanal Conservation Area (inscribed 2000) protects 187,818 hectares spanning Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, made up of Pantanal Matogrossense National Park and the Acurizal, Penha and Doroché reserves.
The Pantanal Biosphere Reserve (also designated 2000) covers over 26 million hectares across Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and part of Goiás.
Cattle ranching remains the dominant land use — the great majority of the Pantanal is privately owned fazenda land, and most safari lodges are working or former cattle ranches.
The Nhecolândia sub-region, in the southern Pantanal, contains one of the world's largest concentrations of natural saline lakes.
Brazil has no daylight saving time (abolished nationwide in 2019), and the Pantanal sits in the UTC-4 Amazon Time zone, one hour behind Rio and São Paulo.
